Insurers join call for policymakers to address skills shortages

12-9-2019

European employers — including Insurance Europe — are calling on EU policymakers to address serious skills shortages in the European labour market.

In a joint statement, the employers warn that growing skills mismatches and labour force shortages in the EU will have a negative impact on innovation and productivity in European industries, including insurance.

In particular, the employers identified a shortage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, which — given the digitalisation of society — are increasingly required by employers across a broad range of sectors.

To address this issue, the employers called on EU policymakers to reform education and training systems, close the digital skills gap at all levels of education and encourage the freedom of movement of workers to address skills shortages in different EU member states.
