Views on the EU Floods Directive

22-6-2020

To coincide with International Climate Change Day, Insurance Europe has published an Insight Briefing that details a selection of the areas in which the EU’s Floods Directive could be improved to better cope with the growing problem of flooding in Europe as a result of changing weather patterns and rising sea levels.

Insurance Europe would like to see the Directive require EU member states to take measures to encourage the uptake of flood insurance. And it would like to see the scope of the Directive extended beyond river flooding, as well as clarification of some of the terms in the Directive. Clear and comprehensive land-use and building codes and their enforcement are also vital, particularly for flood-prone areas, as is the effective use of the substantial and valuable flood-risk data collected as a result of the Directive.
